University of Louisville Hospital (University Hospital), part of KentuckyOne Health, has come a long way from being a small organization set up by the Kentucky General Assembly in 1817 to serve a growing frontier town. Today, University Hospital stands as a level 1 trauma center, with 404 licensed beds in the Louisville, Ky., metro area. Although it is a full-service medical center, the hospital has also set itself apart as a specialty center. Its James Graham Brown Cancer Center is one of only 21 cancer programs across the nation to maintain accreditation for 65 consecutive years. The hospital also has the distinction of operating the state’s first Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center, a designation given by The Joint Commission.

Broken bones, fevers and abrasions definitely warrant expedited treatment, but the equipment-heavy, energy-guzzling emergency rooms used to bring back near-death patients aren’t really necessary for those non-life threatening cases.
