The collapse of the national economy has been felt in many ways: according to Florida’s Blood Centers (FBC), an Orlando-based organization, the gap between demand of blood and supply of donations has reached as high as 20%. Regardless, this blood bank is taking steps to continue its success in bringing donors and patients together.

Working in a laboratory, it can be easy for technicians to get caught up in the science of pathology and forget what lab sample X stands for: a person. At Boyce and Bynum Pathology Laboratories, employees are constantly reminded to think of the patient waiting for the lab results. “It can be easy for them to feel like they are just putting out numbers, but those numbers and diagnoses mean so much to someone,” said Dr. Michael Curry, medical director of Boyce and Bynum. “We impact lives, so we train our employees to be more than just scientists.”
